The Piano Extravaganza festival and competition are coordinated by award-winning concert pianist and director of URI’s piano program, Dr. Manabu Takasawa. He conceived and organized the first competition in 2004, and has seen it grow in size and quality each year since then.
In 2010, the festival continues with its early April time slot. The 2009 festival competition was the most successful yet. Thirty-six young pianists from all over New England participated and received acclaim from both judges and guests. A number of the participants also compete at regional and national levels. The competition is also recognized as a great opportunity for younger pianists who are looking for more than simple recitals and adjudications. In the next year or two, the URI Music Department is planning on adding a separate competition for adult amateur pianists. Any feedback or interest in this event would be greatly appreciated. You can send your comments to Dr. Manabu Takasawa. As in the past two years, an Honors Recital will be offered to top-rated pianists in the piano competition. It will be held at a later date and location.
